Academy award winning actor Matt Damon has taken YouTube by storm after teaming up with web sensations to spread the word about Water.org. Water.org is an organization that raises awareness about the current water crisis in developing countries throughout the world. As Matt mentions in an introduction video for the organization, an estimated 2.6 billion people are affected by the crisis. Due to the lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation, children are forced to miss out on daily activities, including attending school, and a lot of them have even lost their lives.
Matt, along with YouTube web stars, is determined to make a change with help from the public. In a short featuring a staged press conference, Matt uses his acting abilities, combined with comedic chops of video extras, to discuss the devastating realities caused by unclean water. After the attendees of the press conference laugh at the seriousness of the situation, Matt decides to prove to them just how important this crisis is—by declaring that he is going on strike. Awes from the audience ensue when they realize Matt is willing to give up using the bathroom until a solution for the problem is found.
The fact is, more people in the world have mobile phones than a toilet; and with a donation of only $25, clean water for life can be given to a person in need. It’s that simple message that Matt is trying to get across—a message that has reached over 1 million viewers combined through video collaborations between Matt and popular YouTube stars, Shay Carl, The Live Prude Girls, Lisbug and more. To become inspired by the viral videos, visit YouTube.com and then head over to Water.org to help make a change in underprivileged countries with a small donation that can help save lives.
